Friday August 23 ... Update from yesterday...

Just an update from yesterday's posting...

Thanks to our friend Wendy, we now know that the "sod house" we thought we saw from the road along the Cabot Trail is the Lone Sheiling (also spelled Shieling). It is a stone reproduction of a Scottish shepherd’s shelter surrounded by 350 year old sugar maples.  Wendy remembered this from her first trip to Nova Scotia. http://www.historicplaces.ca/en/rep-reg/place-lieu.aspx?id=9772

I also wanted to let the blog readers know that most of the photos you saw yesterday were taken from the back of the bike, so they certainly are not as good as they could be.  Having said that we have both been pleasantly surprised by how well some of them actually do turn out. We have found that many of the pull outs are poorly marked, i.e. one is upon them before you even know they are there, and it's hard and dangerous on a big bike to make sudden turns...at least for this "mature" biking couple! :) We also find that the roads here have little in the way of shoulder, and when they do it's often of the gravel variety...again no fun stopping and not safe to do so on the bike...and thus my photographic endeavors have sometimes left something to be desired.  Don't let that deter you from making this journey...it is definitely worth it!

One other thing I have been meaning to ask blog readers...that is if you know what this flower, or perhaps it's a weed, is?  We have seen it growing profusely in ditches and fields since we hit Ontario in particular...any ideas?

More about our day today in Halifax later...
